We should not think that vairagya yields devotion. By vairagya meaning: renunciation, penance, austerity – you’ll do this and then you’ll get devotion. No such thing. These devotees on account of their inner evolution, what Guru Maharaj called “the gradual unfoldment of heart”, they are less and less dependent upon external things. So it’s a consequence of what’s going on internally, otherwise it would be mistakenly assert that some external thing you can do will produce something internal. That can never be in pursuit of substantial Krishna consciousness… The superior internal joy consequence: less involve, less necessity for the external.
